• Peter Drahos presents 10th Annual Niro Lecture, Chicago
  Peter Drahos delivered the 10th Annual Niro Lecture at DePaul University College of Law in Chicago on 15 March 2007. Each year, an influential figure in intellectual property (IP)/information technology (IT) addresses faculty, students, and area attorneys on current IP/IT issues. Previous speakers at this prestigious event include Hon. Frank H. Easterbrook, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit; Hon. Richard A. Posner (2004), U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; and Q. Todd Dickinson (2001), former Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patents and Trademarks Office.

• Visit by Professor Michael Blakeney, Queen Mary College, University of London
  Professor Michael Blakeney visited CGKD on 26 and 27 March. His visit included a seminar titled 'Weapons of Mass Deception: counterfeiting, piracy and terrorism' as well as meetings with members of CGKD. Professor Blakeney is Herchel Smith Professor of IP Law at Queen Mary, University of London. His current research projects are in traditional knowledge and access to genetic resources, and geographical indications.

• 'The Patenting of Biological Materials: Explanatory Memorandum' by Luigi Palombi, 6 November 2006. Luigi recently presented at the 11th International Congress of Human Genetics
  Which was held in Brisbane in August 2006 and at the European Society of Human Genetics in Leuven, Belgium.

• Call for Australia to authorise generic avian flu drugs: Dr Buddhima Lokuge and Prof Peter Drahos say that Australia must consider locally producing mass supplies of generic drugs to prepare for an avian flu pandemic. 'The Commonwealth Government or a State can authorise somebody other than the patent owner to use the patent,' Prof Drahos said. 'Potentially a local generic manufacturer could be encouraged to make large amounts of the drugs at cheaper prices.'
